And now, brothers, we want you to know about the grace that God has given the Macedonian churches. Out of the most severe trial, their overflowing joy and their extreme poverty welled up in rich generosity.
For I testify that they gave as much as they were able, and even beyond their ability. Entirely on their own, they urgently pleaded with us for the
privilege of sharing in this service to the saints. And they did not do as we expected, but they gave themselves first to the Lord and then to us in keeping with God’s will… see that you also excel in this grace of giving.”

2 Corinthians 8:1-5, 7b

Why do we give?

It is an act of worship to God. God does not want something of us. What He wants is us; He wants our hearts! If we place our treasure in His hands, our hearts will follow.
“For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also…” (Matthew 6:21)

To steward the work of God in our world. There is a deeply satisfying, intrinsic reward of seeing God’s grace flow through us to others. There can be a real thrill of experiencing the blessings and power of God working through us. “In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.'” (Acts 20:35)

How do we give?

Joyfully and generously.
“Remember this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever
sows generously will also reap generously. Each man should give what he has
decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a
cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace about to you, so that in all
things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.
2 Cor. 9:6-8
